Classical Music Downloads

Does anyone know where I might be able to download free, legal classical music mp3/ogg files? I'm listening to an old tape of Bach songs and it makes me long for a nice collection of such songs. They don't have many cd's here of classical music. Of course, I could simply go to Amazon and buy them, but, I don't know where to start. Anyway, any suggestions?

    Next stop, google!

It was my understanding that classical music was written before copywrite laws were enacted and therefore, legal to share and distribute, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...

    On another note...8-track?! ;D

Please try explaining this to the recording artists... the music it self might be free as in speech, but the recording is certainly not.
Some obscure music was only available for a short time; it wasn't released in multiple formats. For instance, Crosby, Stills an Nash released a live album called "4-way Street.; it sold poorly and was removed from release in 1974. I didn't have a copy on vinyl, but I found a used 8-track copy, and was able to dub it to cassette; then I had a fairly good cassette copy of an obscure CSN album. It's since been released on CD with additional live tracks.
That's a specious argument, but for the sake of peace on the forum, I'll let it pass.

Personally, I really have no problem with the two of you exchanging a few oggs.. I would just like Cloverm to have his part in the green, plus I do think you agree to something like this in the LJR community agreement...

thank you for taking this to email from now on..

For sake of keeping peace and to stop the dmca from being exercised here, I deleted the potentially "offensive" post.

Now, I don't believe in exercising my moderator responsibilities arbitrarily, but I felt that it was a good idea to do so in this instance. I apologize if I offended anyone by doing so. I simply wanted to protect my friends and associates here from any possible negative reprecussions.

    Cheers

I didn't see what was deleted, but I don't see anything wrong here now. The music asked for can legally be distributed. The artists are long dead and probably would prefer that it is distributed so their legend can live on, if they even care. You're not taking money from anyone that actually deserves credit for the work. The RIAA can't do a thing about it. I don't see a problem here.
