Debian install - help needed please

Just installed Debian 3.0 on my backup HD and have run into a problem.
My video is all messed up - I entered the same info as MDK uses but it is not working, i.e., the date and time appear all over the screen, resolution is way bigger than I wanted. Does anyone know the command to re-set the video card? Thanks for the help.

    try xf86config

    Tried that - no luck.

A bit late response, but dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 (or whichever one you use) works alot better than xf86config.
