IT HAS ARRIVED.... [BIG PICTURE]

FreeType 2.1.3 is here, behold, finally X has very pretty fonts.

The hinting system has VASTELY improved, and I most say if you like AA fonts (some brain damaged indiviuels don't) this is a MUST HAVE upgrade...

Here's a little taste of the still very unconfigured setup I have going on MDK9.

I just installed the latest stable version of freetpye and it made no diffrence ... is more to it than the unix instructions say (./configure && make && make install)?

You wouldn't be running RH8 would you?

IIRC RH8 doesnt have the font optimizations already compiled in. That would be required. Some tech site had a howto, and I followed that. I personally didn't have any real problems. It had the XFree patch, some doodad that put some MS fonts in there and one other thing .... Anyhow RH8 had like one extra step to prevent things from going south ... fast ... and messily.

AFAIK, RH8 has some CVS patches to 2.1.2 making it infact 2.1.3 in many respects - and they did extensive work on XFT2 so I would think that the new enhanced Open Source hinter remains nearly the same visually speaking..

Oh and the hinter you speak of is also included, but hardly ever used since it's patented to Apple, and I also found that the new hinter in freetype2 (the free one) is MUCH better than the patented one.
