i am not sure if one can, a midi has only a few dozen instrunment sounds it can make, unlike an mp3 or wave which can use any audio stream...

I was playing with midi this morning and I started to think that it possibly is not possible like you said.... I will be getting a new phone in a couple of days that I can send it midi files as ringtines. Do you know of any good midi players in Linux?

Actually you can, and there are multiple softwares for doing it, at least for Windows. I haven't checked linux yet, but I assume you could do it.
