xf86config

I compiled X today following the PET, and it seems to have installed fine, but when I try and run xf86config it says that it can't find libXext.so.6 I have this lib installed on the system, and it's under /usr/X11R6/lib so I added this directory to my /etc/ld.so.conf file, but it still gives me that error when I try and run xf86config, can anyone help me out?

di you run ldconfig after you added this line? also this file is very finicky about extra charactors at the end of lines.
