Thread: System locks up at P.O.S.T.

    System locks up at P.O.S.T.

Just got a replacement Athalon 1.0 CPU from AMD. Plugged it in and fired up the system.

Low and behold it locks up at post. Sometimes a continues beep (more like a stuck key) But mostly just after the Matrox video logo and before allowing to hit del key.

Sometimes I am able to get there but, it will not go past that point. I am unable to access the bios.

I have reset the bios but that did not work. I have swapped memory from PC100 to PC133 and removed the jumper on my MSI K7 Turbo2

    Any suggestions?

After thinking a bit, my original post seemed retarded.

Try this -- reseat the CMOS chip if necessary. Then power up with the CMOS clear jumper enabled. then power off and reset the CMOS clear jumper to the normal state. If all else fails -- remove the battery and wait a few hours or so. The CMOS charge should dissipate after about 20-30 minutes, but wait at least a full hour and see.

The good news is they put the CPU fan on backwards and now I can boot. I still am unable to get more than a single IDE device recognized. If I plug two into the primary it either does not recognize the HDD or it puts wierd symbols in the slave position. Leads me to believe that there is a bios problem somewhere.

The secondary IDE channel does not work period (Original problem).
about the only thing I have not changed out so far is the ribbon cables :

Okay, here is a trick I learned to use after dealing with a ton of POS PC's at work here ::

If you are using jumperred Master/Slave, do Cable Select. Otherwise use jumperred Master/Slave settings.

This may help. Plus try using a different IDE ribbon.

goto mimimum boot config: cpu, ram, power supply,
mobo, vid card. boot up ok? now add things
    one at a time.

It appears that I have figured out my problem. After numerous spare cable attempts I got pissed and pulled the cable from the wife's box and low and behold it worked just great. I have devices I have devices!!!!!

    Thanks all
