[Fatal Error]

I just ran "iptraf" and there was stuff happening. Can anyone explain how to use this app?

I have never used it before, but have you tried man iptraf?

Some of the sys-admins must know how to use it, it seems to be a network monitor of sorts.

DESCRIPTION
iptraf is an ncurses-based IP LAN monitor that generates various network statistics includ-
ing TCP info, UDP counts, ICMP and OSPF information, Ethernet load info, node stats, IP
checksum errors, and others.

If the command is issued without any command-line options, the program comes up in interac-
tive mode, with the various facilities accessed through the main menu.

Must be a command line network sniffer, right?

I just use ethereal (http://www.ethereal.com) - GUI and it has native clients for Linux and Windows. It's very full-featured and reliable.

Now I am really lost, just two machines here on a router (three when the wife has the laptop out) I ran "iptraf" with no other connections open, there was incomming and outgoing traffic (excuse me if I don't use the right terminology). "iptraf" gave the address 192.168.x.xx then a : and more numbers. I will study man iptraf.

I kinda keyed on the IP part of the title, its hot here in Louisiana and I would like to take off my tinfoil hat.

Sounds normal to me. You've got your machines setup with private address-space IPs, right? So they're broadcasting back and forth because they're operating off of the same switch and in the same subnet.

A lot of sniffers will translate what it means - next to the numeric information they'll display verbiage like "who has 192.168.100.5? Tell 192.168.100.3."

Mostly I am trying different things with the CLI, some day I will input the right stuff and everything will work.
