    What About Firestarter???

I'll admit it, I don't have any internet security. I want to have a firewall installed, but I used to get some serious problems with Firewalls with my previous distros. However, I reckon Debian has it going well, so I wanted a new firewall program. Does anyone know any good Linux firewall software? Has anyone used firestarter? I was wondering if it was worth getting it?

As far as I know *all* of the current Linux firewall programs _use_ iptables. They're all basically front-end GUIs that write iptables rules. If you feel like getting down and dirty with some serious scripting, you can read a lot about iptables, write your own ruleset, then fire it up and see how it goes. In my experience, however, it's a lot easier and just as effective (at least in a home use scenario) to use firestarter, shorewall, guarddog, or one of the other front-ends to do it.

Personally, I use the built-in firewall generator packaged with Libranet (http://www.libranet.com). Works like a charm.

Thanks for that guys. I have used Firestarter, and it runs a treat! It seems to pick-up a lot of attacks that I don't even notice. It kinda makes me fear for the people without firewalls...

I have used Firestarter for over 3 years with no breakins on any of my linux boxes. It is good software. v1.0 is about to be released any day.
