    I snagged 14 gigs from what was a ntfs partition, and made a fs3 and was able to get Psyche to install into it ... BUT ....

    As happened with my attempted RH 7.2 --> RH 7.3 upgrade (see this older thread)

    I can't get better than 800 x 600 and 8 bit (256) colors danm it!!!!

    The more I mess with this... the more Lindows is sounding good

    I know there is an answer ... and I know *something* will cure it... I am running out of patience and hair.

    Oh, 'ya while I was moving things around with Partition Magic 8.0 I fsk'ed up badly my install of RH 7.2, so I can't now, get back into it. Here is that error message. Anyone can lend a clubie as to how to recover? I tried linux repair but didn't know what to do in the shell.

    Now I created a new mess!

    I hate to follow myself, but I did *it* this time.

    On my RH 8.0 install, I was messing around to try to get it off 800 x 600, 8 bit/256 color and I was partially successful.

    Remember that on RH 7.2 I could run 24 bit and any size I wanted, but upon install 8.0 wouldn't go higher than 800 x 600 8 bit... well, I did tease it up to 1024 x 768 and 15 bit color with beautiful (compared) results! I tried one more click to 16 bit color and all hell broke loose.

    It went back into the jacob's robe collage of colors and locks up that I described and got in that other older post.

    Now I can't get back into 8.0 at all, even with a boot disk ;-( The only way I know how to do it would be to reinstall from scratch, and I'd rather not lose even the 24 hours of tweaking and setting up I've done to 8.0

    Is there any way to get it back to 15 bit color when I can't even get a terminal or CLI?

    That leaves me with 7.2 AND 8.0 that I can't get into ???

    Oh, 'ya and Mandrake 9.0 crapped as well with a long laundry list of errors (like install error in exec of stage 2 due to a fatal I/O error in stage 1) . but I'd rather stay with RH IF I can get it on track.

    For me when it rains it pours! lol, but I'm *still* trying to be 100% linux although there may be some point I bail!

    Well, heres an idea :

    Use the first RH8 CDROM as a boot disk, and do

    linux rescue

    at the lilo prompt

    Now, go in and modify the XF86Config file by hand that way.

    Well, progress I have 8.0 behaving and at 1152 x 952 (still 15 bit colors, and it dies with 16 bits!) but darn, I'm near a happy camper!

    While I miss the KDE that is absent from 8.0 (and I was never a fan of Gnome) I think 8.0 is one outstanding disto (in spite of the grief I've had)

    I wish I could hear some magic bullet to cure this though:

    hello,
    good job at getting the X working a bit better - please post the entire file /var/log/XFree86.8.log, also please post the massages that will happen when you type startx at the command line to start up X, i.e. not use a loggin manager. there must be something in there...

    this looks like a grub message, is a bum disk being used to boot the machine? I would take that disk and put it in a machine that uses an other hard drive and try to recover the data that way.

    Here's what is in /etc/grub.conf NOW ... I've been fsking around to try to make it work. The 7.2 entry used to look just like the windoze entry. But this doesn't work *yet* either, and now returns an error #15, istead of a #13 (no help for me tho)

    The RH 8.0 and Windoze XP entries DO work, just the one for 7.2 doesn't

    If anyone has any ideas of how to make the 7.2 entries to work, I'm all ears

    CLI in RH 8.0

    Paul,

    I struggled as to how to startx at CLI in Psyche and so far haven't been able to find a way. I'm sure there is one, but so far it alludes me. That is both good and bad news.

    RH is doing a *much* better job of hiding CLI (and darn it, KDE) from users, but for those that know how or want to CLI it is hidden.

    If anyone knows how to CLI without the login or sessions managers let me know, and I'll try to get the results of startx

    well i have not installes rh 8.0 yet, but ii am positive it would have a CLI. I guess this is exactly what I woould like:

    1. Edit /etc/inittab and make it such that you boot straight to CLI, or you can use GRUB, but untll we have X working exactly like it should lets not worry about that. This is done by changing the 1st line that is not commented out and replacing the 5 with a three,
    here is the line with a 5 -> id:5:initdefault:

    2. run redhat-config-X or what ever it is called now and get a mode where X will fail. i.e. bump up the resolution of color depth.

    3. open a terminal and type init 3, then log out and you should be in run level three - i.e. w/o X running. if you can't find a terminal type ctrl + alt + f1

    from here typing startx should make it such that you can' strart X properlay and the last 20 lines or should be the info we are looking for.



    For the bad drive - run fdisk - but do *not* hit w!!! - but with fdisk you should be able to egt some good info, like making sure the partition table is all okay. it has a pretty help system too.

    RH8 has a cli, just like previous releases. CTL+alt+F[1-6].

    As for your VGA, try going to 16 bpp at 800x600 and see if that helps. Then we can crank it up from there.

    RH8 has a cli, just like previous releases. CTL+alt+F[1-6].
    Eggzellent! In my case ctl+alt+F1 works to get TO cli now how to get back? (without losing the stuff I had open ie: ppp )
