    Promise 20276 Raid controller

    Ive got this MSI KT3 ULTRA ARU VIA333 mainboard.
    I run raid0, two wd80gigzSE.

    I want to install redhat 8, but the promise 20276 controller was just added in the kernel 2.4.19, and rh.8 uses .18 kernel...

    ive tested so much the past couple of weeks with 7.3, and when i heard that 8 was coming i thought it may helped me....

    but it didnt...

    any tips?

    Re:Promise 20276 Raid controller

    Well according to the 2.4.19 changelog support for the 20276 controller was added in 2.4.19pre5. The kernel that comes with Red Hat 8.0 is patched to 2.4.19pre10-ac1.

    I looked at the source code for the kernel that comes with 8.0 and the PCI ID for the 20276 is listed.

    switch(dev->device) {
    case PCI_DEVICE_ID_PROMISE_20276:
    p += sprintf(p, "
    PDC20276 Chipset.
    ");
    break;

    However, since I don't have one of these controllers I can't say that it actually works. Or if the raid features of the card are supported. More then likely raid support is only via linux software raid. Which you would probably be better off using anyway.

    IDE RAID controllers do not perform their RAID functions in hardware. They essentially perform software raid in the controllers bios.

    Re:Promise 20276 Raid controller

    it managde to detect the drives, no problem there, but it seems that it wont detect that im using raid0...

    i belive that since it cant read the partition table...

    btw, do you think i could get it to read the partition tables if i get an non-raid disk to put redhat on?

    thanks anyway

    Re:Promise 20276 Raid controller

    If it detected your drives at all I would say you can use it in non-raid mode or using Linux's software raid.

    The only way to find out is to try it. I don't have one of your controllers to test. Unless you want to box up your computer and send it to me, so I can try it.
