You need to run gmplayer, not mplayer -gui
sorry i had to repost this but the search option here never works good
i had mplayer working a while ago in redhat 7.3
just installed it and i can run it from right clicking on the file but i get no gui player.
i remembered to use --enable-gui during the configure and i just took the example.conf, renamed it to config move it to .mplayer and uncommented the skin line but didnt see a gui line like the documentation says.
when i run mplyer -gui i get this:
[sdwillie@localhost sdwillie]$ mplayer -gui
MPlayer 0.90pre8-2.96 (C) 2000-2002 Arpad Gereoffy (see DOCS)
CPU: Intel Celeron 2/Pentium III Coppermine,Geyserville (Family: 6, Stepping: 3)
CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 0
Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 SSE
Reading config file: /home/gabucino/.mplayer/savage4.conf: No such file or directory
this option can only be used in config file:
Error: 'gui' is not a mplayer/mencoder option
command line: -gui
[sdwillie@localhost sdwillie]$
any idea what the config is supposed to look like or what the fix is?
thanks

Ya know, that would explain a hell of alotI did the same thing, and tried running it pretty much the same way and just said fuck it. I associated mplayer to movie files and just used the keypad.
Thanks cloverm!
awesome, thanks man. ;D

one problem, i run it and get " cant load ~/.mplayer/font/font.desc"
but i made sure to create the .mplayer/font direcotory and it has font.desc in it.
?
I'm not sure, but I have mine in /usr/local/share/mplayer/font/font.desc
I had a few problems with font dirs and skin dirs etc. I found it best to have them in both places. /home/.mplayer, and /usr/local/share/mplayer
I know it seems stupid but it seemed to work

I had that error. In my case, it was caused because I put the folder with fonts inside the fonts folder in the mplayer folder. I copied all the fonts from the folder where they untar to the fonts folder in mplayer, and it works fine.
that last post confused the hell out of me !!!!!
i made sure the fonts folder was extracted and put into ~./mplayer/font
and /usr/local/share/mplayer/font but that didnt do it. weird right?
My bad, i thought that would happen.
When you download the fonts from the mplayer site, it decompress to a folder, called iso-8859-1. This folder has inside many multiple folders witht he same font in different sizes. (arial-14, arial-18, etc) Go inside one of these folders and copy all the contents of them into /usr/local/share/mplayer/font
