I have no idea why, but I can confirm the fact that it is indeed quite slow.

what version of gnome? I am running gnome2 beta from Ximian, and it works fine. The fonts here are pretty messy, but works fine. for normal text processing that requires legible text, I do use xterms or konsole, whic run about all the same speed. Are you doing transparencies or any other crazy visual effects?

yea, transparency. I guess it's not that critical just hoping for a quick fix.

Could update to Ximian. It can cause havoc when updating to a new release of your distro, but is a lot cleaner and prettier than vanilla GNOME.
