    xterm through linksys router

    Hi,

Im connected through a linksys router that has a static IP and gives me one using DHCP.

I can logon to my linux machine at work via ssh but if I try to xterm& it comes up with 'cannot display' error. Is this a port forwarding problem?
    It's BEFSR41 linksys router

well that's not the problem. the client knows where the session is coming from however the server is trying to send it to the router since it is using a valid world IP, my machine is using NAT assigned address (192.168.0.2). Is it possible to have the router forward the ports?

just forward the appropriate ports to that machine. The firmware should be able to do that rather easily.

May be I'm totally off here but .....

XTerm is the X version of the terminal sessions so unless you have X forwarded to your box at work, you can't run xterm.

When you log on to your home box via SSH, it already assign you the shell and that's all you get .....

If you want the whole desktop to be displayed, then you will need to set up the Xforwarding. I believe we have a PET for it.

Hey go to your config webpage 192.168.1.1 normally and click on the far right tab (orange) and then in forwarding make sure you have the ports you want forwarded to the ip address you have put on your machine

Be stingy when you set this up though if you only want port 80 forwarded put
    start Stop IP
    80 80 192.168.1.XXX

likewise if you are hosting a few games
    4000 4002 192.168.1.XXX

This will improve your security by limiting the amount of ports forwarded.

I don't use DHCP on mine though I just assigned static IP addresses to both computers. I set the linksys up as my ISP assigned static IP and then gave them 192.X.X.X numbers. Seems to be much faster without DHCP running.

If you need more help email or ICQ me
