Are you sure you're using the right com port? That's the only logical thing I can think of.
Everytime I try to connect to the internet, kppp comes up and says that it is initializing the modem. Then it justs stays there. It's not hung, as I can press the cancel button and it will disconnect immediately. My question is: What should I do? I just installed Mandrake (I never had this problem with Slack) 8.1 and I am using an external 56k modem. Any ideas (besides reinstalling Slack, which I might just do anyway)?

Yes, it's the right one. The modem lights blink when I hit connect button. It's just that after that it does nothing else.
Are you using any init srings? Perhaps the ATZ (I think) can help.
