If I understand things correctly, you should still be able to get your favourite mp3 decoder as source code (like with the lame encoder).

They won't need to, I am sure that Microsoft will be more than happy to pay their 0.75 per download <joke>I wonder how many downloads it would take to bankrupt Microsoft?</joke>
Actually, if you read the licensing terms, all that is required is a one time fee of $90,000 to carry on using the format - I bet Billy has that in loose change down the back of his sofa.
Like flashingcurser said, mp3 is here to stay.

One thing confuses me though ... how can you own an idea or a thought? The mp3 format is an idea/thought (just like all software is ... thoughts and ideas in a semi concreate form).

ok guys... we can stop dreaming about Ogg taking over the world (at least for now):
    http://newsvac.newsforge.com/newsvac...47.shtml?tid=6

The article itself is in German, but the quote from MP3 patent holder Thomson Multimedia is in English, and it says Thomson has been charging royalties on commercial MP3 players since 1995, but has never tried to collect royalties from developers of "freely distributed software decoders."

But it is nice to know there is a no-strings-attached alternative available any time we want/need it. At least 95% of my files are in ogg vorbis format.

Just a side note: "vorbis" is the name of the music compression file format. "Ogg" is the name of the entire project encompassing all kinds of media formats such as "Theora" (a VP3 video codec + vorbis sound) and "Tarkin" (a video codec).

I spend many years learning a trade
I have a great Idea for a new product (tangible or intangible)
I spend hours --days ---years creating the product
    I OWN the product
I can sell the product to a giant corp (Like ms)
    I can give it away.
