Optical - the only way to go.
I used to go through ball mice about once every six months. After awhile, the guides would get sort of bent or overworn, and the thing would lose its tracking. And let's not even mention having to clean out the hand salsa.

hey i got on of those
did u ever get your side buttons working in linux? if not, u might wanna check out my PET on how to get them to work.. it's in the hardware section
The side buttons work, but I could never get them bound right in Quake3. It would view the side buttons as like buttons 2 and 3. Could never make it realize there were five buttons.
I'll check out the PET. Looked far and wide for info on this awhile back. Nothing I found solved my problem. I'll take a look.
Thanks.
I've got a trackball; I have to clean it about once a week, but I like it and when it dies, I'll get another one.
In the spirit of this thread, a blast from the '60's!!

I keep my balls clean with regular maintanance. Every month I get in there and give it a good clean out, remove all hair and dust and any bugs. Works like a charm.
This thread could have gotten real dirty. By the way my balls are very clean.....
