    Re:Audio card recommendations

    they could be called kernel headers, they should be ob the disks, pretty standard stuff

    Re:Audio card recommendations

    Yeah, I would think I'd be able to find them easily.

    I the RPM manager for Mandrake 8.2, I can see both installed and installable rpms. I can't seem to find anything called with the name kernel headers, or headers.

    I'll check the disks (though I think they are accessed by rpmdrak).

    Re:Audio card recommendations

    OK - this is curious....

    I found a package on the first disk of the distro called:

    kernel-headers-2.4.18-25mdk.i586.rpm

    However, when I tried to install it, it said that it was already installed.

    Now, when I query it:

    rpm -q kernel-headers-2.4.18-25mdk.i586.rpm

    returns

    package kernel-headers-2.4.18-25mdk.i586.rpm not installed

    Any ideas?

    M

    yea!! just do a rpm -q kernel-headers to verify it is installed, don't include version number etc.

    Re:Audio card recommendations

    Okay - did that. It returned:

    kernel-headers-2.4.18-25mdk

    So, according to this. They are installed.

    Might they be in the wrong place? Any ideas why the link failed?

    Re:Audio card recommendations

    Here's some more info after a little more digging.

    The Makefile is:

    ifndef AUCHIP
    AUCHIP = AU8830
    endif

    ifeq ($(AUCHIP),AU8830)
    NAME = au8830
    ASP_OBJ = asp30.o
    endif

    ifeq ($(AUCHIP),AU8810)
    NAME = au8810
    ASP_OBJ = asp10.o
    endif

    ifeq ($(AUCHIP),AU8820)
    NAME = au8820
    ASP_OBJ = asp20.o
    endif

    VER = $(shell uname -r)
    MODDIR = /lib/modules/$(VER)/misc
    CONF = $(wildcard /etc/modules.conf)
    ifeq ($(strip $(CONF)),)
    CONF = /etc/conf.modules
    endif

    INCLUDEDIRS = -I/usr/src/linux/include

    #
    # CPU types, Uncomment one only!
    #
    #CFCPU = 486
    CFCPU = pentium
    #CFCPU = pentiumpro

    #
    # If you have an SMP system uncomment the following (experimental)
    #
    #AUSMP = -D__SMP__

    #
    # Debug/Optimization
    #
    #CFDEBUG = -g -DDEBUG=1 -DDEBUG_AU -D__VerboseMode
    CFOPT = -O6 -fomit-frame-pointer

    # Do Not Modify Anything Below This Line!

    ~snip~

    I'll change the chip to pentiumpro (I have a PII).

    Should I change the INCLUDEDIRS = -I/usr/src/linux/include

    THanks,

    M

    Re:Audio card recommendations

    I'm confused - but happy nevertheless.

    It's working now, though I don't quite understand why now.

    I moved the tar archive from my home directory to /root

    I then retarred it, edited the Makefile, ran make install,
    and got the following errors:

    cc -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -DAU8830 -mpentiumpro -O6 -fomit-frame-pointer -Wall
    -pipe -I/usr/src/linux/include -c -o au_audio.o au_audio.c
    In file included from au_vortex.h:66,from au_audio.c:49:
    /usr/src/linux/include/linux/malloc.h:4:2:
    warning: #warning linux/malloc.h is deprecated, use linux/slab.h instead.

    I get this for a number of pieces (au_midi.o, au_midi.c, etc)

    This is followed by:

    mv -f /etc/modules.conf /etc/modules.conf.old
    gawk -f mod_conf /etc/modules.conf.old > /etc/modules.conf

    echo "alias sound au8830" >> /etc/modules.conf
    echo "alias midi au8830" >> /etc/modules.conf
    mkdir -p /lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/misc
    cp -f au8830.o /lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/misc
    /sbin/depmod -a
    /sbin/rmmod au8830
    rmmod: module au8830 is not loaded
    make: [install] Error 1 (ignored)
    /sbin/modprobe au8830
    Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/misc/au8830.o will taint the kernel: no license

    Is it just warning me that the kernel now has pieces in it that aren't necessarily approved?

    I'm just curious at this point, as it does work.

    THanks a bunch for your help.

    M

    Re:Audio card recommendations

    excellent!! much cheaper than a new card.

    yea - if the GPL licence is not with the module it will taint the kernel.

    Re:Audio card recommendations

    Yeah, it's also way more gratifying to get my card to work,
    then to have to purchase another.

    I need to read up on this stuff. I don't understand 1/10
    of what's taking place when I do this kind of thing.

    Thanks again for your help,

    M
