    bitmap files

    Does linux handle .bmp files or do I need to convert to png or jpeg or other?

    Linux (the kernel) does not handle any image files. However, there are several programs (like the Gimp) that will handle them, including .bmp files.

    Sorry, misphrased question but your answer helped out. Had bmp file I wanted to use as wallpaper and it worked out fine thanks.
