thats okay -
let me clarify everything you did

1. you downloaded the driver emu10k1-v0.19a.tar.bz2 from sourceforge, this was saved in directory /root

2. you did a tar -jxf emu10k1-v0.19a.tar.bz2


3. you did a cd emu10k1-v0.19a

4. you did a make

5. you did a make install

6. you did a modprobe emu10k1 and that is when the errors occured

Am i missing anything?

when you type ls -l /usr/src/ what comes up?

that is exactly correct, with two exceptions. i'm using the emu10k1-v0.18-2.tar.gz, and i used the command "tar zxfv audigy-driver-2002-01-24.tar.gz

then cd to /usr/src and type ln -s linux-2.4.18-5 linux
then
go back to the directory and a make then a make all

then do a depmod -a then a modprobe emu10k1

does modprobe sound get anywhere (odds are it won't, im grasping here...)? if not then could you please reboot and look in the file /var/log/dmesg for something that looks suspicous.
