Trouble connecting from Linux Box to Samba Server

I am running Mandrake 8.2 on my PIII 1G, with Samba to share the printer. My development box (P200) is running RH 7.1 (I think), Apache, MySQL, PHP and Samba. I use Samba to share the www directory so I can connect to it from my main desktop box, which worked fine when I was doing this from XP.

But, as usual, Windows is pissing me off, which is why I'm using Mandrake, and trying to connect to the WWW dir on the web server and use Bluefish to do my coding. Problem is that although I can see and open files in the shared dir, I can't save them, or create new ones. It works fine from the XP box, and also from my wifes machine (2K), but not from my mandy box. I'm using the same username, workgroup, but nothing seems to be working. Any ideas?

I just want to code :-\

smb.conf below - www_doc is the offending dir

If I understand your problem, things are working OK except for sharing files between linux and linux. Samba is not the way to do that, but one thing I've used is NFS. Here is a link for how to do it with slackware, but I believe it should work the same with other distros: http://www.slackware.com/book/index....rce=x1304.html
I see the link didn't work quite right, but just click on the one for book and look in the networking section.

Use NFS. It rocks and is simple. Add a line into your /etc/exports file. Then make sure NFS is running on the server. On the client, activate nfs, and do this :

    mount -t nfs /ServerName:/share /where/to/mount

Cheers, I now have NFS running, and am connecting fine.

But it seems silly to have one server (Samba) running to share to Winders boxen, and another server (NFS) to share to *nix. I was under the impression that Samba worked fine for *nix clients.

it is iffy when it comes to samba. It works, yes. However NFS is wayyy more stable, robust and feature rich. Plus the amount of shit I have taken due to samba fucking up is in the $1000 fee mark if it was clients eating up my time.

You can run Samba for linux to linux...I've been doing it for a long time. In a mixed OS environment, using Samba for everything means having to fiddle with one less utility.

Re:Trouble connecting from Linux Box to Samba Server

Just did a re-install (my father sent me the SUSE 8.0 disks), and installed Samba, and am having no trouble seeing the other Linux machine, or the W2K machine. I must have been doing something wrong, but couldn't see what.

On a side issue, if SUSE stays stable (have only had it for 12 hours), and I am able to do everything I want, I am going to piss my XP install off completely. I am most impressed.
