NVIDIA drivers and compile problem!

well, I installed WineX, and thought this would be great if I installed my GL drivers...so, I downloaded the tar files for GLX and kernel...I got some odd messages while compiling the kernel:

but then I compiled glx, and then i left X and tried to restart it and that gave me errors and didn't work:

my first guess is that the kernel source is not installed at /usr/src/linux - please make sure it is.

the other messages are from failed X attmpts, the nvidia GLX driver needs to have the nvidia driver loaded.

have you compiled your kernel as i586 I had about the same problem as you with the new nvidia drivers on slack 8, I compiled the kernel as i586 then everything worked gr8

I believe you need to compile the nv driver / nv glx to the same version / and optimization as your running kernel. That's why nVidia has a dozen or so pre-built versions.

Are you running a 2.2 kernel??

I don't think that will work, and yes you need the kernel source for the current running kernel. Ideally the kernel/modules ought to be compiled before the nVidia stuff so everything matches.

On the other hand try commenting out the fbdevice in XF86Config as well as glcore and dri in the module section and make sure glx is there, before doing any additional compiles. Just in case it works

you need to have xfree86 4.1 or better, kernel 2.219 should work, it worked with 2.2.17 for me back in the day (a year or so ago...)

Do you have the kernel source? I do think you need the currently running kernel source installed, not just the headers. The headers should be linked there anyway e.g. /usr/include/linux should be a link to to /usr/src/linux/include/linux/.
