WTF is going on with Linus?

When will we have a new kernel release? We haven't had a kernel release for 5 months

Linus no longer works on the stable linux series (2.4)
Linus works on the 2.5 series which has had releases all the time.

Marcelo is working on the 2.4 series and 2.4.19-rc1 is out so i guess 2.4.19 final isn't that far away.

besides, it's a good thing that we no longer have stable kernel releases every month. remember the 2.4.15 fiasco?

Marcelo keeps things EXTREMELY stable yet he manages to merge some great new stuff, like the IDE changes. If you absolutely positivly have to have a fun new kernel then look at these:

    wolk.sourceforge.net

    www.infolinux/jp/

    http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/mjc/

    http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...lan/linux-2.4/

or do like me roll out you own kernel patchset (requires a bit of time and some C knowlegde)

I have to say, that the recent few RedHat kernels by Alan Cox have been rather nice. I dont disagree that there seems to a bit of slowdown on the 2.4.xx, but since I am not a kernel developer or follow it that close, I could be 100% wrong. I must ask though, why is there the worry? If it works well, why upgrade so quickly? If there isn't a major problem, I am more than content with waiting for the work to get done correctly. I do recall the 2.4.13 nightmare with the fs barfout.

Well, look at it this way -- we dont need that many updates cuz, wee are using one of the best OS's out there, with alot of crap already fixed! I see this as a bonus. Not like the fact that with winders there are serious flaw patches every other hour due to an OS bug.

Hey, I just installed XP on the wife's box and since it has been running about two weeks I have gotten upgrades every day. Hummmm.... At least no blue screens....

    Be thankful we have stability...

I noticed here at work, that if I disable all of the eye candy -- it runs alot better stability wise.

What the hell are you talking about??

In windows, there are serious flaws discovered every other hour. They're patched every other blue moon.

Please, don't post if you're going to make such uninformed posts!!

Oh and while you are all arguing, Marcelo has released 2.4.19rc2 so a new stable release is right around the corner.
