    Re:KDE-3.1 Alpha Screenshots

This definately isn't my week... KDE 3.1A refuses to compile on any of my boxes... and Gentoo hates my RAID.

But hear KDE3.1 has some nice features in the making, such as SVG icons, a rewrite of some important kwin bits and of course tabbed browsing in Konqueror. Most importantly I hear the Java problems have be sent back to hell..

and of course tabbed browsing in Konqueror.

actually, i wouldn't wanna get my hopes up on that one. yes, konqueror does have support for tabs, but it's extremely minimal actually. u can use tabs, but u can't configure them in any way so if u wanna use tabs u have to right click on a link, and then press Open in New Tab if u want to see tabs. otherwise, there is no way u'll see tabs unless u actually select them manually. so the tabs are nowhere near how opera or even mozilla implemented them. and to make matters worse, i just went into #kde on irc.openprojects.net to ask when the tabs would become more configurable and someone told me that due to a feature freeze it wouldn't be any time soon.

but other than that, KDE 3.1 rocks

Well currently it's at the same state as in Mozilla, you can't set mozilla to open default in tabs anyways...

Gnome is more modular and it really allows you to have fun with your set up while KDE has more of a large-packaged feel (like konq comming in a package with a bunch of other stuff not by itself.).

due to that 'modular' approach of gnome i actually get the feeling that gnome isn't really an environment like KDE is. with gnome i always have the impression that they took a bunch of applications and that they tied them together in a sloppy way and labeled it as a Desktop Environment. Whereas KDE is definitely an Environment. The applications fit together a lot better and it has the feeling of being a real Desktop Environment.

and if u want modular, u can just get the source of a package (like kdenetwork for instance) and only install those programs of that package that u actually want. for instance, u downloaded kdenetwork, but u only want kmail and knode.. u don't want the other programs. so then u run configure in the kdenetwork dir, then u cd into the kmail directory and type make and make install, after that u go into the knode directory and u type make and again make install. that way u'll have knode and kmail installed without the rest of kdenetwork. how's that for modularity?

but Gnome just has a prittier and modular look/feel (as of 1.4/2.0)
well, that obviously depends from person to person
i've never really liked the way gnome looks, and i love how u can make KDE look and i'm sure many people agree and disagree with me on this one.

u can set mozilla to open tabs by default if u use the middle mouse button on a link. even that isn't possible in Konqueror. i'd already be really happy with that.
