I think it all depends on where you live. Try one, if you get crap connections complain, say that you could of paid for dialup to get those speeds, dont pay at all, switch to cable/Switch ISP.
And if you get resonable connections, try a different cheaper ISP (dont start at the cheapest) you can always switch back if you buy the router.

The NIC's MAC address is different from your DSL/Cable modem's MAC address. What we commonly call as cable/DSL modems are nothing more than brouters ( bridge+router ). The modem is the one that cable companies keep track of in their network. What your hook up to it is entirely different story.

Rogers Cable in Newfoundland keeps track of the NIC's MAC address. I know, because I had to call in the NIC's MAC address to get hooked up. Before calling in the NIC's MAC address, I could not connect to the Internet.

I'm not positive abou this, but I think there are other cable ISPs who also do the same thing.

I had Shaw Cable Internet when I lived out west. There, it did not matter what NIC I used.

I've also read where people have hooked up cable/DSL routers and had to emulate the NIC's MAC address to get hooked up.

We all know that 56k is the way of the future. I would never give up my 3 k/sec. Dynamic IP, only connected when you want to be. What could be better? ;D

Ok, I have compiled a short list.

    1. Gouging my eyes out with a rusty spoon.
    2. Cleaning all the toilets in Grand Central Station with my tongue.
    3. Jumping into a swimming pool filled with double-edged razor blades.
    4. Ripping out my toenails with an icepick.
    ...
