    Java!

    I started learning Java a few days ago. It's very similar to C++, so I'm finding it rather easy. I want to lean towards applet programming since I can already use C/C++ for applications programming. Does anyone have any suggestions for some simple but fun applets to build to help me learn and build interest? Also, do you have any links to recommended tutorials, especially on applet-specific programming? Here's a link I found that has a lot of various information.

    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/

    Make XBill in Java. Should be simpler than anything else I can come up with. Or build a GUI frontend via java for a CLI tool, like CDRecord or whatever. Just tips.....

    Those are some pretty good ideas. It would be useful to make an http-based configuration tool like Swat. You get an applaud.

    try playing around with Java servlets. personally, i think they're really cool and as always, Sun provides functionality for just about everything u can imagine... and when it comes to documentation, u won't find anything better than java.sun.com

    Yes, java.sun.com is an excellent site. More companies should support their programming languages so well.

    Hmm... I made a program that converts text into binary. For those interested, here is the code.

    Code:
    import java.io.*;

    public class Binary
    {
            public static void main(String args[])
            {
                    StringBuffer userInput = new StringBuffer(1000);
                    char n;
                    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
                    try
                    {
                            userInput.append(in.readLine());
                    }
                    catch (IOException e)
                    {
                            System.out.println("Error reading from keyboard: " + e.getMessage());
                    }
                    finally
                    {
                            byte[] inputNums;
                            inputNums = userInput.toString().getBytes();
                            for (int i = 0; i < inputNums.length; i++)
                            {
                                    for (int j = 128; j > 0; j /= 2)
                                    {
                                            if ((inputNums[i] & j) == 0)
                                                    System.out.print("1");
                                            else
                                                    System.out.print("0");
                                    }
                                    System.out.print(" ");
                            }
                            System.out.println();
                    }
            }
    }
    And here is a sample of its usage.

    Code:
    bash-2.05a$ javavm Binary

    Re:Java!

    So I can take it that you are getting the hang of Java then?

    Well I'm still a beginner but I'm getting there.

    Re:Java!

    I made a mistake. At the print methods near the end of the code, "1" and "0" need to be swapped.
