    Mandrake connecting to the internet

    Hi

I managed to get my modem working under Gnome in Mandrake. I am pretty new to Linux. I setup my account. Entered my username and password for the internet. When I went to dial it makes the connecting sound but where it would normally check my username and password it bombs out with an error. Sorry I cannot remember the error message. Do I need to enter some information in the setup to tell it to check for my username and password?

First off, I would need more info than what you are giving me. What program are we using? What info have you typed in? Once we get that out of the way -- I can help.

The GUI internet dialer in Gnome (at least in Mandrake) is broken junk. Don't even waste your time with it. You can connect and disconect from your dial up manually by opening a terminal window, going to su mode and issuing the command ifup ppp0. To disconnect, do the same but use ifdown ppp0.

The KDE dialer, kppp works quite well, and you can use it if you want a GUI dialer.

Should I be in root or admin mode when I set up the connection?

I will try KDE when I get home this evening.

    Re:Mandrake connecting to the internet

I have always used wvdial when using my dialup modem. I have been on (till sunday) a cable conenction, so it has been a while. But for wvdial, you need to be root or have root rights to the adapter (ppp0 and wvdial itself)

I would reccoment kppp, since my friends have had good luck with that. GNOME's dialer I have very little knowledge in, but the same principles should apply. However, if CGA is correct, the program may be in alpha stages and just not work that well as of yet. These all should be a GUI frontend to pppd. Look up some info on that if you dont have wvdial (which is the easiset I have ever used, short of the evil Windows DUN utility). Its pretty basic -- edit your wvdial.conf and your /etc/resolv.conf and your good for go.
