    MySQL vs PostgreSQL

Im running a production database server with a PHP web front end that is used my Program Managers to make updates to thier various projects. When I first started this project in May, MySQL seemed like the way to go, and thus far I havent had any problems.

Recently Ive been reading that MySQL cant hack it in a production enviorment, and is about as useless as using MS Access, while PostgreSQL is the opensource dB of choice.

As mentioned above, I havent experienced any problems thus far, but Im expecting to have at least 30,000 records by then end of this month. I perform weekly tars of the dB directory (var/lib/mysql), but if Im floating on a sinking ship, Id feel better knowing now than later.

Anybody wanna chime in for a "reasonable" debate based on personal experiences?

I don't really know much on this subject, but I think you have to be pretty large scale for mysql to not hack it anymore. I just noticed an article on www.slashdot.org ( http://books.slashdot.org/books/02/0....shtml?tid=156 ) and it mentioned:

MySQL has been used as a database for many sites and products. The U.S. Census Bureau, Slashdot, Yahoo Finance, and many other high-traffic web sites use MySQL for their database needs.
Those sound like some pretty heavy traffic websites if you ask me.

    Re:MySQL vs PostgreSQL

Just stumbled upon this article that may interest you, it has nothing to do with PostgreSQL but it relates to MySQL vs Oracle a bit.

If MySQL is good enough for nasa, it's good enough for me
