    Unusual startup problem

I recently replaced by backup HD with a larger one (13+ HB). It was supposed to have been blank but after turning on the computer (and leaving the room) I came back and found XP on it. The backup HD's jumpers are set for slave and the main HD (6.3 GB) is still set for master. Yet when I boot up the master HD is not recognized - instead it boots automatically into XP. If I tell it (in XP) to exit and restart - the master HD is recognized. Also if I use a boot disk I can get into MDK 8.2 ok. Also if, upon startup I hit delete and go into BIOS and reset the master HD it then goes to GRUB as it should. Any suggestions? Should the larger HD be mounted first as the master? Thanks!

If the BIOS setting is at "auto detect" then it might catch the larger one first..
Are they on the same cable? try physicaly setting the larger one to be as slave, by having it as /dev/hdc ..

Sure got me baffled. When I first boot up it does not even recognize the Linux HD (master) but goes straight to XP. Yet if I close out XP and tell it to restart - when it get to recognizing the HD's it picks up the Linux HD then and I can access LILO/GRUB just fine. Only other way I can get in is to hit "del" and then tell it to auto find the missing HD - it does and all works fine. Yes they are both on the same cable. The larger HD is already set as slave and is picked up as such.

Enter you BIOS, do an auto detect, select it _not_ to perform auto probe on boot. And save the HD settings to ROM. So that it is staticaly set to the info's where the Linux HD is master and XP HD is slave. And only keep auto probe on the second IDE cable.

Else move the XP HD to the second IDE cable.

Check your bios for a boot off of hd whatever option. I had that problem with my K7AMA mobo. Kept booting into 95, which was on the second hard drive, even with it configed as a slave.
