Gentoo vs. Lovey's SB Live!

Okay ever since I recompiled Gentoo with GCC3.1 (read my praise thread in distros), I have been completely unable to make sound work.

Not even as root.

Here goes the details

I tried using 2.4.18 vanilla with OSS - no sound
using 2.4.18-pre8-jp13 with ALSA 0.9RC1 - no sound
2.5.20-dj3 with ALSA - no sound

all sound modules hard linked to the kernel, no modules at all.

My user is a member of the audio group, as is root, and not even root can make sound work, I tried messing with the volume in kmix and playing stuff with mpg123/ogg123/noatun... still no noise.

My amp. doesn't show activity on the line.

Did I physically break something, because I tore the PC apart, and the Soundcard (SB Live! 5.1) is firmly placed in it's slot and I know that it worked on my previous install like this, using -jp13 and alsa.

THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS..

oh and did I mention that Gentoo per default uses DevFS? (if it's important)

It sounds like most of your bases are covered, I know that this may sound silly.

But, have you tried using different speakers or headphones ? Are you getting any errors at all?

if you cat /proc/pci does it show your card as being detected by the kernel?

Turns out the cable was shorted... I hate idle soldering...

So is this the end of Gnu/LoveLinux? IIRC, you didn't like Gentoo much in the beginning. Also, how easy is it to add combreloc to binutils with gentoo? I'd like to give it a go because my LFS system hasn't worked out the way I'd like
(Its quite messy and KDE does this wierd thing when rendering the menus, could be cause I decreased my amount of shared video mem?) but I'd have to find someone with a net connection fast enough for me to do it

Do you have any idea just how hard it us to solder when your arms keep moving all the time??

It's so annoying, but at least there's some form of connection in my cable now - I have sound....
