afaik initrd is an ramdisk image that is created during boot to load some modules - so my guess would be it is just this image that is placed onto the disk
I noticed that on all my servers there is /initrd directory.
I don't remember creating it. Is that something that is automatically created as a result of some OS finctionality?
thx

Why it suddenly appears on my disk, I mean what can cause this directory to be automatically created?
I think you have the initial ramdisk in your kernel enabled and you are using it ..
O.K.
I just don't remember seeing this directory right after install....but I cannot tell for sure that it wasn't there, next time I'll pay attention to it :-)
