Thread: LJR or Linux uber elite?

Re: LJR or Linux uber elite?

What am I supposed to base it on, then? The questions they ask are the only indication I have about the type of person they are. If they ask stupid questions, I will assume they are stupid people. By ``stupid,'' I am not referring to the subject matter of the question. I am referring to the way it is phrased, and the amount of work that the person has put into answering the question himself before posing it to the message board. In the .tar.gz case, it is fairly obvious that the poster did NO work before asking us. If you enter ``installing .tar.gz software'' into Google, the VERY FIRST HIT gives explicit instructions on this matter.
I don't think that there are stupid questions, just stupid answers ...
I mean if I wanted to know something, lets say about insects - the subje ct doesnt matter - and then I ask someone who knows about that. Am I a bad question asker because I didn't find out myself .. then i think we wouldn't need this board because the people would just have to find the answer on google.

Cloverm - so glad you brought up this issue. It has been on my mind

Okay - here is my take on it:
People don't always have time/energy/ambition to look it up for themselves. Guess what - some people have lives outside of Linux, perhaps their children, wifes, mom in a nursing home or perhaps they are a person working 60 hours per week at burger king to pay the rent. Many of you may not care but if those people want those people using linux too then let them have it. not just the ones who happen to be intellectually gifted ones.

I hear many times from people I am trying to pimp linux to that people who use linux are snobs and think they are smarter than others. That sucks, but i can certainly see why they fell that way.

anywho, i rarely have time myself to get into the high level conversaitions and as far as i am concerned the purpose of LJr is to be helping out those who may seem like down trodden idiots but just wanna use thier computer.

Yeap. Those people bitching are those who do not have life outside their parents' provided comforts. So they have no way of knowing what life is like outside of their little world.

They may be intellengent in some ways but they certainly are not wise enough to know about life.

Indeed, it can be frustrating to try and answer a question poorly asked. But I've found that with a little patience, you can converse/help without coming off as belittling the questioner. I usually answer poorly framed questions with more questions. This usually helps the person who needs help frame a better question the next time around.

Rudeness begets rudeness I think, and we certainly can live without it.

Re: LJR or Linux uber elite?

I am guilty of asking what I thought were important questions and finding out that the answer was on some other website. It took almost 5 months to find out that linuxdoc.org existed. So for now I will continue to ask questions that you might think are stupid. However, until I find answers I will continue to ask.

Now for the google search. Perhaps some of you that are more familiar with setting up a search can post a PET as I am quite tired of spending hours researching something to have 70% show up as p0rn sites or some gambling related site.

I tried to help the guy out, cause he asked for help finding a PET or something. Since no-one had pointed him in that direction I tried to repay the help I got with basically the same thing.

Anyway. I am here to help, learn and grow as a Linux user if that means asking the dumb q's I will.

see, feztaa was an asshole because he didn't tell the newbie that he could look it up, he just kinda told him to quit asking complicated questions.

but there will always be overeactive shitheads like this to deal with on the internet

admins can either 1) moderate (such a good idea, but it's going to piss a lot of people off) or 2) rely on people to be more thick-skinned (if someone can't handle the uber-no-social-skills-shithead-1337ers, then they probably shouldn't be on the internet in the first place.).

and don't be afraid to just up and tell the newbie "don't listen to that fuck, here's what you do or where you find the answer".

how will it piss people off to moderate? by doing that we'd get rid of the dumb asses and get the people we want here, those who know what the fuck and those who want to know what the fuck.

I agree. I know Feztaa was a cool guy and all but it was very unwise of him to say that someone should just quit doing something just because they don't know about it. If someone already knew about it, then why would they be here??
Feztaa asked the same kind of stupid questions when he was setting up his home network and gateway. Cloverm has all those posting on his backup CD to prove it. The questions can be viewed as stupid for someone with some knowledge of how networks works. I didn't just tell him that he wasn't ready for doing his own networks and stuff. I explained every details in simple manner for someone with not much experience of networks can understand.e of networks can understand. Talk about people forgetting where they come from in their journey of learning.

    I'm afriad you are correct.

don't be afraid to just up and tell the newbie "don't listen to that fuck, here's what you do or where you find the answer".
I guess we proved that point with this thread .....
<edited> Okay with not this thread but with the original thread in question.</edited>
