yea more people should come to #ljr
and when they do join, they immediately leave cuz there's only about 5 people in there and nobody is talking at the time... how the hell do u expect to build an irc community like that?
just join the channel, and if nobody is talking IDLE around... minimize ur irc program (or goto another terminal if ur using bitchX ) and check in occasionaly. if someone's talking, say something. if it's quiet, idle and go on with whatever u were doing but don't leave the channel

Since I've never used IRC...is there any significant difference in them (mIRC, bitch, etc)? ???

yes, mIRC is for windoze only
BitchX is very good but console-only (the X version sux ass)
X-Chat is excellent if u want an X client

edit: but in the end it's all the same though.. different clients just have different settings/options and stuff, but it's not like if u use a certain client that u can only talk to people who use the same client (like instant messaging). u can talk to whoever is on there, no matter what client u or they use

If I had a permanent connection, I'd idle and see what's going on once a day or so, maybe help with a problem or two. I wouldn't participate avidly (I detest IRC and other chatty things like that), but at least my name would be there to encourage others to join. When I get a new place (probably summer or fall term), I'll try to get high speed internet. It's really easy to open up an xterm, start up bitchx, and move it to some other desktop. Just be there people.

    Yo! ;D

I do drop by once in a blue moon : and it is really quite quiet compared to #lno

Anyway, I usually join both channels at the same time ;D
