I have a Dell GX270 desktop unit with the Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (/etc/sysconfig/hwconf) on which I installed Fedora Core 4. I decided to add RAM to the box and then xwindows died on reboot with the following message.

I googled message boards which said to upgrade the BIOS to version A04 and set the video RAM in the BIOS to 8MB, not 1MB. The BIOS code was apparently faulty and didn't correctly relay the video RAM settings to Linux. I used the biosdisk utility and the BIOS EXE files from Dell, but that didn't work.

Some forums had reference to an 865 patch in TAR and RPM formats. That didn't work either.

Some forums talked about rebuilding the kernel with AGP video support for Intel as a loadable module. That didn't work either.

Some forums said to reduce the color depth in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. That didn't work. I even used the original xorg.conf file from a backup I had and that didn't work either. This file said the card was using the i810 video driver, and searches on this didn't help much.

I tried setting the system BIOS to factory defaults too.

Code:
Erase NVRAM settings -> caps lock on, numlock on, scroll lock on, type ALT E.
Factory defaults-> caps lock on, numlock on, scroll lock on, type ALT F.
The interesting thing was that all these fixes only worked for some people.

I had to get it fixed because the single PCI slot was occupied by a wireless NIC and I couldn't find an AGP video card to replace the onboard controller as the low profile case was too narrow to fit any cards I could find.

I decided to reinstall FC4 and it now works fine (A06 BIOS, 8 MB Memory Video BIOS setting)

Has anyone else been this unfortunate and how did you get it fixed in the end?
