Yeah, it really is terrible to walk into a hospital and get free treatment for anything that they are capable of healing. Damn you socialist bastards! Why must you heal me freely!!!! GAHHH!!! > > >

Here in Sweden (and most of Europe I think) everyone has got a health insurance, we donīt have to pay it ourselves*, so those bloody smokers cost every taxpayer a lot of money.

It has been discussed whether they should pay extra if they need treatment for something caused by smoking. I think they should.

    *We pay through taxes though.
Here in the UK it is a little different. Ciggies are heavily taxed, a packet of 20 costs nearly Ģ5, most of which is tax. The tax the Government gets from smokers, each year, is considerably more than it costs to run the National Health Service.

So here non smokers aught to be greatfull that so many people smoke, it paves the way to their free health care.

Wasn't it you that was complaining about the high taxes you have to pay for smokers? I know I would be. By the way, instead of taxes, we have health insurance which basically gives us the choice of paying full when we go to the hospital or paying monthly like you.

And I think we need to follow Britain's example and tax the shit out of cigarettes. Let those smokers pay off the national debt. I don't want to sound like I hate smokers. Most of my friends smoke. But since they're too stupid to realize that smoking leads to a painful death, they need to pay out the ass until they realize how much it costs them and they quit.

Kenshi, why don't we tax the hell out of booze as we know it too is a health risk. Then how about firearms as anti gun nazis tell us billions and billions of people are being killed in this country every year.Let's tax the shit out of automobiles since they are a big health hazard. My point is,where will it stop?

    Nope.

Besides, as MSD said, cigarettes are taxed (in Canada, too). I'm not sure how high the tax is or how much they cost, because I don't smoke, but I remember this thing in the news recently about the government increasing taxes on cigarettes...

By the way, instead of taxes, we have health insurance which basically gives us the choice of paying full when we go to the hospital or paying monthly like you.
Well, I'd choose the monthly payments anyway, so it doesn't really matter, then, does it?

Let those smokers pay off the national debt.
    I'd rather they paid for my next check up/broken leg/hep B shots/etc...

Alcohol can actually be beneficial if used correctly. Some people need to drink wine before they go to sleep for health reasons. It wouldn't be fair to make them pay more. Tobacco helps no one in any way (except the people who own or work at the companies). It makes no sense to use it and we need to get people off of it while getting something out of it. As for guns, those hardly ever kill people, much less immorally. And there is no better abundant alternative to cars. People must have cars so taxing them would do no good.

It matters if you care about having the choice. I would probably wear my seat belt by choice but I'm pissed off that I don't have a choice.

Whatever. It doesn't matter one bit what they pay for as far as I'm concerned as long as it benefits society.
