I think I've seen (heard?) music that was GPL'd.Has there been any discussion/licenses that dictate redistributable music?
Has there been any discussion/licenses that dictate redistributable music? I know that napster is payforplay, and trading mp3's is technically against the law .... but has there been anyone who has written a license that artists can use so that their music can be played royalty free on non-profit orginizations? This would 1.) Add more exposure, 2.) Allow non-profit orginizations actual music to play, 3.) keep the RIAA's hands off the music played there.
Just a thought.

yeah, I was reading something about it, OpenMusic or something... I forget what exactly it was called though.
in theory it'd be great, but, this is reality, so...
I don't really mean GPL'd music. That would imply people could change the music and resell it under GPL. I'm talking open as in people can listen to it and band controlls it rather than corporation controlls it. There is about the same amount of bands who liked napster and pirate radio as that disiked napster and pirate radio. Bands on the listeners side are like Face to Face, Alkaline Trio, The Offspring, Hot Rod Circuit, Dixie Chicks (yuck!), etc ... The bands against it where the corporate excuses for music like Blink 182, many, many rap 'artists', lincoln park, limp bizket etc...

yes there is a license for open audio its from the EFF :

here is a site where bands can sign up that they release under open audio :

hth,
Do you mean like shout/ice-cast? I did read an artical on how casting stuff was leagal. As long as you don't publish play lists more than 1/2hr before the cast, and you cast title/artist with the track, you are leagal and don't have to pay royalties.but has there been anyone who has written a license that artists can use so that their music can be played royalty free on non-profit orginizations?
