I don't think you can get a domain name for free. I use http://www.directnic.com to register domain names. They charge $15 for a year.
Hi,
I want to start up my own child domain under say, *.org
is this hard to do? are there any free places to do this. this is just sort of a personal domain, and won't be serious, yet.

I read about 5 years ago that there is a place ( a University ) where you can get a domain name for free. But the domain format must be your-domain-name.the-city-you-live.county.state.us ( for USA ). So I abandon that thing since there is no guarantie that when they will implement your domain name. So, I just fork out my $ 35 a year and register it. So much easier that way.
There were free domains offered by http://www.namezero.com a while ago but I'm not sure they have that any more. Do a search on Google for it and you might find some.
Check out http://www.registrydomains.net
They have following prices:
.com/.net/.org price per year: $9.85
.info price per year: $9.85
.biz price per year: $9.85
.tv price per year: $44.95
.ws price per year: $9.85
.cc price per year: $29.95
.us price per year: $9.85
Sure, it's not free, but 10$ per year for a .com domain is a great deal. So far I haven't found a better offer.
