    Nope.
    yes
    http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/encoding.html#2.4

MEncoder (MPlayer's Movie Encoder) is a simple movie encoder, designed to encode MPlayer-playable movies (AVI/ASF/OGG/DVD/VCD/VOB/MPG/MOV/VIV/FLI/RM/NUV/NET) to other MPlayer-playable formats (see below). It can encode with various codecs, like DivX4 (1 or 2 passes), libavcodec, PCM/MP3/VBRMP3 audio. Also has stream copying and video resizing abilities.

That's a separate piece of software, dude. Mencoder != Mplayer

but the surprising thing is that, that had nothing to do with my question.

it clearly says that it's a part of MPlayer

anyway, u asked for something that could encode DIVX and i told u what could do it, end of story

Yes it has, Mplayer's mencoder can record tv shows if your tvcard works under linux.

Okay thanx for your help, guys. My main gripe is that when you mentioned MPlayer, i thought you meant mplayer as in the program, not the package. On the command line, you type mencoder, hence the confusion.

Now that you've told me about mencoder, I'll play with it, but part of my question still remains on audio format and frame rates for DivX.
