another prime example of why everybody SHOULD like redhat
Red Hat, the top seller of the Linux operating system, will begin offering a higher-end and more specialized version of Linux later this year that won't be as easy to find as the current all-purpose package.

Hopefully it won't cost as much as Windows 2000 AS.
d00d, you're sick...another prime example of why everybody SHOULD like redhat
We should like all distros, especially those made from pure debianit
I think that version is still free ( since it will consist of all free softwares ) but just that it won't be readily available for download as a package. Since it's just a matter of packaging it, I'm not going to be surprised someone would do exact same thing and come up with FREE version ( such as Mandrake or Connectix ).
I just had a thought... are these mainframes 'linux-only' in the sense that IBM is only shipping them with linux, or in the sense that only linux is compatible with them?
If the latter, then how did they pull that off? What did they do to the hardware that allows linux to run on it but not other OS's?
Big Blue is shipping them with Linux, although Im sure OS/390 will run on them if the customer requested such.....Im sure they'll choose to shave some portions of that $600,000 price tag.
Oops, posted that to the wrong thread![]()
Actually, they are all compatible with Linux or the original OS (AIX or whatnot). It is just a shitload cheaper to grab a linux server than a zSeries with IBM's house UNIX flavor. Same horsepower, less licensing fee. That is the real reason IBM is pushing it so hard. Ramp up sales by cutting the price tag in more than half.
