    Oh my god...

I just installed the libXft nohint hack posted on /. and I must say, I'm VERY impressed... damn it looks so pretty.

You're right, it is impressive. I've just finished downloading it and I can't wait to install it. Thanks for the tip!

To be slashdotted is to have your site logged onto by so many people (possibly because they read about the site on /.) that your server slows down considerably (maybe that is why you get the 403 errors). It has been known to bring websites to their knees.

It does not seem to work for me. I tried the first suggestion and my fonts look the same.

Okay, I'm looking at the sreenshots on the website, and while I can see the difference, it does not look all that amazing to me. But if you say it is, maybe I should try it.

    Re: Oh my god...

BSD users probably already knew this. However us linux users have to go in and manually do the mod. This REALLY makes a difference on fonts that are not hinted.

    Re: Oh my god...

I've looked briefly at the Xft2 code, and it appears that the new version will include a more comprehensive and configurable framework for dealing with hinting and the like. So this is likely an interim solution.
I'm perfectly happy to wait, then. My fonts look just fine to me

    Re: Oh my god...

Well, the local BSD god here in Wisconsin that attends the 2600 with me let me in on that a bit ago (whenever it was first figured out for real) and told me to try it. IT made an unbelieveable improvement in font quality. I have been doing this modification (essentially removing hinting since most fonts dont have hinting enabled in them) on every box for some time now. Ever since my last bout with Mandrake.
