i've been trying to convince my dad to dual boot his box mac/linux but he's reluctant. however yesterday my sister came into my room and told me she wanted extereme messanger, i hadn't heard of it but looked at the link, its like gaim but for windows. i told her it wasnt for mac, but that there was gaim for linux, that she could run on her box if i put linux on it. she said no she didnt wanna do all that typing stuff, but i told her i could make it as easy as the mac to use, and twould be faster and she could have gaim (she likes the tabbed windows) anyway so she's gonna let me set her box to dual boot. i need to get it faster than mac, and easier to use. really just for web browsing and gaim. i was thinking kde but that does take a /long/ time to start up. she loves playing with the ui for her box, so something with a lot of themes is good. and something that doesnt need a text editor to configure...... and something slim.
she'll need a file manager, prolly gmc if i dont go with kde.
any ideas to make this /really/ easy and fast?
i was gonna do mandrake because tis easy. but i'll be the one installing/configuring so i think i'll copy most of the lfs off my ibook. that way tis slim, she has a 2.3 GB hard drive. (80MB ram, and 200MHz 603 if your wondering)
most of the 2.3 will be needed for mac, i'm thinking i'll take the .3 for linux..... maybe more but not much.
thanks!
think easy, and think fun. she's 13 and likes bells and whistles.

8) WindowMaker 8)
I agree with Enlightenment. Of all the window managers I've seen, it would probably be the favorite for a youngun like her.
run it without gnome though, cuz that'll only slow the box down
XFCE!!
It is amazingly fast, very configurable, and you can configure it all with menus, no config file editing required (although you can edit config files if you want, it is not neccessary).
www.xfce.org I think![]()
not just window manager, but file manager and stuff too.
does xfce come with a file manager?
i'm thinking mozilla for the browser, maybe gaelon though, twould be faster....
konq is way to slow, opera has the banners....
Yup, XFCE is a whole DE, but it's not as slow and ugly as KDE and Gnomedoes xfce come with a file manager?
I'm pretty sure it has everything. An editor, cd player, the whole works.
It's not as themable as KDE/Gnome, but the themes it does have look good and it's speed makes up for it, imo.
I'd go with opera, it's the fastest browser you'll find for linux.i'm thinking mozilla for the browser, maybe gaelon though, twould be faster....
Oh boo hoo. I can live with a banner, especially considering it's the only browser I've seen for linux that loads in less than 5 seconds...konq is way to slow, opera has the banners....
Theres just something messed up about running a OS based in free software with a browser with banner ads. It's like turning your net experience into a TV comercial more than it allready is.Oh boo hoo. I can live with a banner, especially considering it's the only browser I've seen for linux that loads in less than 5 seconds...
