What is a bit anyway??

A bit is the smallest piece of digital information. A 0 or 1.
8 bits make up a byte. Eg: 00100110
An 8 bit processor works with 8 bits of information at a time, a 64 bit processor works with 64 bits of information at a time wich makes it run a lot faster even at the same MHz.

heh... I "know" what a bit is... It was an obviously failed attempt at a joke. I was picturing something like a Monti Python skit...involving someone in a field wearing tights.

No, they should be 32bit still. The next generation should be 64 bit, though. I'm waiting for the G5 to come out, then I might buy one. Or, I might wait for the AMD Clawhammer chip. One or the other.

You can also compile an LFS on a Mac.

Whenever I decide this system I currently use is dead I am going to switch architectures. I've asked questions about Sparcs 64bit arch, Alphas 64bit arch, and learned why they are at 400mhz and such. Why is Mac hardware at 400-500mhz? Is it still comparible to PC hardware running Linux?

PCs are faster than macs at most things. Those "benchmarks" on apple´s site are using software that is highly optimised for the mac. How many linux programs are optimised for macs?

I wouldn´t call a high-end mac slow though, it´s just not as fast as a high-end PC at most things. It costs more too.

But macs look cool (except imacs, yuck!) and OSX seems nice.

They may not be quite as fast. I don't really care about bench marks as I am not that high end of a user that such bench marks would matter. Anyway they talk about periods of time that I wouldn't even notice unless I need to do a large volume of high-end work.

I would say though that they do run quieter and cooler than most PC chips. which is alot less demanding on the boards and powers sources.

Hey ursidae,
I have a PowerMac G3 350 at work that smokes my P3 733 at just about everything. Video encoding, photoshop effects you name it. It can encode video transitions twice as fast and it has less memory and a slower HD than the PC.

Ashcrow dude, forget about Linux on a Mac: MacOS X is SO sexy, that I want to ccrap my pants! Best GUI in the w0rld as well as the power of Unix (FreeBSD and NetBSD specifically)
