Thread: Learn from my mistakes

    Learn from my mistakes

    System =
OpenBSD 2.9, physically about 1km from me

    Wanted to do =
    Untar src.tar.gz and srcsys.tar.gz under /usr/src

    Have done =
    cd /usr
    tar xzf /home/andrzej/src.tar.gz

    Should have done =
    cd /usr
    mkdir src
    cd src
    tar xzf /home/andrzej/src.tar.gz

    Problem =
/usr/src/libexec/ld.so used to an important library file
/usr/src/libexec/ld.so is now a directory containing sources (so are /usr/bin, /usr/lib, etc).
Most programs will fail ("Failure reading ld.so&quot. Only /bin works.

    Solution ? =
I have another OpenBSD 2.9 box - copy /usr/* from there

    Drawback =
scp won't work ("Failure reading ld.so&quot

    Workaround =
I've noticed there is rcp in /bin
Enabled rlogin on the second box, managed to copy files

    Big mistake =
In meantime, wanting to give up, pressed ctrl-D, I'm not root any more

    Why was it a mistake ? =
    $ su -
    Failure reading ld.so
I cannot remove /usr/libexec now, therefore cannot copy the new version
    ssh root login is disabled

Need to go and fix things from the console :'(
    Feel free to laugh.

    mistakes happen

i was transferring mp3s to another partition one morning and ended up deleting about 600 or so MP3s.

While it pales in, I almost had an emotional moment.

Till this day I cant find "Rubber Soul" and "Poisinana" on MP3s

I did something like that in OpenBSD 2.9. I downloaded the source and untar'd it. After I had gotten and used what I needed I deleted /usr (meaing to del usr). :

At least this firewall kept working. I had to take it down for less than 5 minutes.
