If you need libXYZ.so for a program and you compile the program with libXYZ.so in /usr/lib and then move libXYZ.so to /lib would the program still work or would the program need the library to reside in /usr/lib? How about the librarys that are actually created from compiling, can those be moved without stting up a symlink scheme?

As long as your LD_LIBRARY_PATH is including all of those directories, it shouldnt' be a problem, *unless* it hardcodes the location of the libs into the binary when you compile it.

Try moving a few of them to the new location, re-run ldconfig, and then run ldd on your binary to see if it is finding them.

If you compiled it statically, it has all the libraries it needs right in the binary, and you can do whatever the heck you want with the .so files -- but I wouldn't recommend you compile anything statically because it wastes HD space, memory, and time

not to mention the fact that ur stuck with the version of the library that was compiled into the binary.

That could be a good thing in some cases (ie, you're developing a program for a library that changes rapidly and constantly breaks backwards compatability. I doubt that's common, though)
