    Compilers

    I was wondering that besides cpp what other programming languages are available for Linux that can be compiled into executable?

    C (gcc)
    C++ (g++)
    O'Caml (ocamlopt)
    Sather (sacomp)
    Common Lisp (cmucl, clisp)
    Scheme (bigloo, stalin)
    Java (javac)
    Mercury
    Haskell (ghc)
    Pascal (gpc)
    Assembler (nasm)

    I'm forgetting a big bunch I'm sure. By the way, these are native code compilers. I did not include byte-compiled.

    Perl? Can you really compile Perl?

    I know there's a perl2exe program, but I don't know if that's actually compiling. What I've been told is that the best way to get an exe from perl is to make it coredump somehow while running your program, and extract your machine code from the core dump. I think there's actually a pretty straightforward way to do this, but I've never actually done it.

    perlcc will compile perl code, but it's very experimental.
