THAT IS *NOT* a newbie question!! - joke
That said i think mySQL is the most popular linux db program. i have never used it though.
To make a final move from Windows to Linux, I am looking for a kind of database to administrate a huge number of books and articles. It would be very nice if it had a lot of features (similar to the BibTex functions), producing literature lists easy to format, especially filters and so on. This may sound strange, but the polylingual among you may take a look at http://www.uni-duesseldorf.de/literat...
There you can download a kind of database based on Access 2.0 that allows you to sort titles (books, articles) by key word, to introduce citations and so on.
A few weeks ago I had some experiences with the literature database of StarOffice 5.2, but that did not satisfy me. I know that normally I would have to learn some lessons of Oracle or mysql to build my own program, but you know the problem of time and of persuading other people to use finally Linux.
Or what do you think of Kaspaliste 0.33??

I second MySQL. You could also go for big commercial programs such as Oracle or DB2
