    cant even ping localhost

    Hey folks,

I am having two ethernet card interfaces, eth0 and eth1. The eth0 is configured to get the ip address from dhcp server whereas the eth1 is configured statically with ipaddress This eth1 is used as the gateway for the local network. i have a connection from this computer to the local network computer A. and it has an entry in the /etc/hosts file. When i am trying the ping command, it is saying that 'unknown host'.
Simply I tried ping localhost then also it is saying that 'unknown host localhost'. I guess its not at all reading the hosts file. Can anyone please suggest how to fix it. Thanks in advance.

    Have a look in /etc/nsswitch.conf

There should be a line something like
    hosts: files dns
The order is important - it checks this file for the order of hostname lookups - files means your hosts file...
