black screen & gibberish during linux installation

When I try to install red hat linux on an intel mechine
if I install without x windows all goes well,
but when I add xfree86 and gnome desktop the installation is adding dependencies and just before the last screen when I get to the finish line ( and the installation process will begin)
the screen goes black and full of gibberish??

BTW, I managed to install Xwindows on this system before but had a problem with the hard drive so i needed to reinstall.

Do you have any idea what is the cause of it??

Well, the installation media could be bad -- may want to check the XFree86 MD5 checksums. The video could be flaky. But you did say you had it working.... Did you use the graphical, or text installer with RedHat? If you got a SVGA XFree installer then you probably just have bad media (or corrupt hard disc that is causing data degredation)

But if I am installing a brand new installation how does the hard drive get into the picture isn't the installtion suppose to earase and recreate the hard drive.
