    nvidia drivers

So far this weekend I've borked my redhat X install trying to install the new nvidia drivers.
I just reinstalled redhat and before I edit the xconfig I want to know what the error messages mean.

I get this message when installing the kernel package

    <iel/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2313.rh72up_2.4.9_13.i386.rpm;echo RESULT=$?

For the GLX package i get this error
    <U --replacepkgs //home/daniel/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2313.i386.rpm;echo RESULT=$?

I downloaded the redhat 7.2 single proc updated kernel package. I've gone through up2date and have all the updated packages and thats where I got the new kernel from. Anyonw know what the problem could be?

    Re: nvidia drivers

If you reboot and then try startx, does it work? It does say that the nvidia driver was installed successfully, but it has problems inserting the module. Just a thought, as I had similar problems when I was trying to install lmsensors. There were all sorts of complaints whenever I tried insmod, but it always did insert the module no matter how loud it was about it.

    Re: nvidia drivers

make sure yopu have the kernel source installed and try getting the .tar.gz files - these work very good for me.

    Re: nvidia drivers

Well, I am assuming the rpm's are built for the wrong kernel version. Since you dont want to downgrade your kernel, grab as pbharris-USA said, the tarballs and compile them yourself. That will solve any major problems you have. The new drivers kick butt for me, at least.

    Re: nvidia drivers

I had the exact same problem, make sure the kernel headers are installed and grab the nvidia tar.gz (kernel module and Opengl driver).

The first error message is caused by the nvidia kernel module not finding the correct headers. The second message is not really an error just a warning that it backed up your old drivers.

    Re: nvidia drivers

I installed the kernel source. I did up2date and updated to kernel 2.4.9-13 which is the version of the drivers I downloaded. I tried the i386 and i686 both had the same result. So your saying I should try the source and not the rpms?
