    XFCE as windows manager

Had to re-install Mandrake 8.1 (don't ask) and now have run into a weird problem. Wanted to (again) use XFCE as my windows manager but am unable, this time, to do so. I went to Gnome Control Center and added XFCE but when I select it at startup - it comes up in a twm format!! Before the re-install I had no problem setting it up. Any suggestions? Thanks!
