Starting gdm

I want to be able to go straight to the gdm login screen when i boot-up.
At the moment i boot to the CLI and use startx, when i want to go GUI.
But, I have forgotten what file to edit to boot straight to GUI (gdm). I had a look at the gdmconfig file, but cannot see where to start it at boot-up.

I can (as root) do /usr/bin/gdm to get from the CLI.

Using Libranet with IceWm as default (no kde).

Changing the runlevel in /etc/inittab should do it. Use '5' for X11.

Yeah, I tried that, but it still does not boot to gdm, i looked in my sysinit file and gdm is supposed to start on runlevels 2-5.

What i need is something like a kde login manager, that lets you boot to GUI, but i dont know what the equivalent is in gnome (gdm).

x:5:respawn:/usr/X11/bin/gdm >>/var/log/gdm.log 2>&
if not try adding it to use runlevel 5, you may need to have /usr/bin/gdm instead.

Thanks for the info, I added that to the end of my inittab file and rebooted, got an error message at boot-up saying unexpected operator before &, so i removed the logging part and rebooted again, and booted into gdm .

I would like to get the logging part of it working though, so i tried it with just the >>/var/log/gdm.log (i had to create a log file called gdm.log) and rebooted o.k. so the problem is with the "2> &" part of it.I also tried it like this 2 > &, but it didn't work.

I am not quite clear on what the 2> & does though,

I am not sure what that is either, I had modified that from a login manager called loginapp which I use.

The "2>" is a type of redirection... it redirects error output into the file named. I'm currently using a version of this to troubleshoot some trouble I'm having with getting E and gdm to work together properly. An example of the syntax would be.... "#startx 2> error.log"

As I'm making my reply from work I do not have my notes with me on the proper syntax, I hope this helps out.

I didn't read the previous posts, so I'm not sure if this has been answered.
Based on what you inittab runlevel is, cd into its directory and do a softlink to /etc/init.d/gdm. For example, my runlevel is 2 so I:

cd /etc/rc2.d
ln -s ../init.d/gdm S99gdm
